KARRAGARRA FORESHORE PARK, KARRAGARRA ISLAND
Karragarra Park runs along the length of the Esplanade on the northern shoreline of Karragarra
Island. Facilities include parking, a jetty for ferries, a barbeque area and play area.
The preliminary landscape concept for this Local park proposes the following:-
-A safer environment for adults and children where there is currently potential conflict with barge traffic and boat launcing. This can be achieved through the orchestration of movement patterns of both vehicles and people;
-It is proposed to narrow the throat of the road to slow traffic and stop parking between the outlet culvert from the east of the swimming enclosure to the boat ramp/barge landing. This enhances visibility for all and reduces the potential for children to dart out from behind cars into traffic.
-The crossing points for childlren have also been narrowed by the use of a post and rail fence and a nautical themed rope barrier to the relocated playground to restrict their movement across the road.
-The ramp to the toilet has been realigned to make better use of this space;
-The provision of a nautical themed playground where the ramp used to be;
-The larger BBQ structures can now take advantage of a larger grassed spill out space, previously pinned in by the existing playground;
-The concept also proposes an upgrade of the existing car park near the ferry stop with a new gravel surface and timber wheel stops. This enables the regeneration of the edge of the wetlands.
-It is proposed to provide a pedestrian path from the section between the ferry and the beach area, this section has the potential for the most pedestrian conflicts due to parking and ferry use.
-The consolidation of the existing BBQs on the beach side, there is the potential to refurbish with new BBQs under a shelter.
