SOUTH SEA TERRACE PARK, MACLEAY ISLAND
Southsea Terrace Park is located on two sections of land divided by High Central Road. At present the
western section of the park is a sloping grassed recreation area, while the eastern section includes the
Macleay Island Community Hall, parking lot and BMX track.
The preliminary landscape concept for this District park proposes the following:-
-A community garden with gardeners shed, a place to grow vegies and swap plants;
-The creation of a tree lined market square and laneway;
-A planting scheme for the surrounds of the community centre with indigenous species;
-An equitable link to the western side with the access moved to the centre of both sites, which also becomes a safer crossing point for pedestrians.
-The western side of the park will need earthworks modification to gain useable open space.
-The western side features two large modified spaces - one for major events such as carnivals and music events - the other for BMX and skateboard enthusiasts.
-The design of the BMX/Skate Park was inspired by the the Melanesian islanders, the park is named after. The design features an abstracted and contemporised tattoo emblasened on its surface and manipulated to provide a challenging terrain for its users.
-The space for larger events is situated on the upper terrace and can also be used at times as a quiet picnic area surrounded by Moreton Bay figs.
-The welcome structure sits high above the grassed open terrace (3m) and can act as a bandstand for musical acts, as well as an interpretive space for visitors.
-Three smaller modified spaces have the potential to contain BBQ spaces and a large playground with climbing nets etc.
-Toilets are located to the south west.
-The circulation system is equitable for all.
